With Mother’s Day almost here, it’s naturally time to start stressing about what to give my momma as a gift! This year, I think a customized tote bag will do the trick. It will look fantastic on my momma's arm and will also work as a decorative piece on the retro Eames hooks by her front door (where she can keep grab + go items like sunscreen and bug spray in it).
Follow these steps below to make a tote bag for your momma. The links below are affiliate links. I make a small commission, which will pay for a tall latte (not a grande!). My opinions and suggestions are all unbiased and ones that I believe will make this world, and your home, a personal and well curated space.
- Download a fabulous chunky font. The font shown in the sample photo above is Hanley Inline which is part of the Hanley Font Family. Hanley is such a versatile font with lots of variations and extras. A purchase well worth it!

- Set and center your text and choose your mom’s favorite color
- Save the file as a JPG
- Head on over to zazzle.com to upload the art to any of their tote bags. Here is one bag which is large and simple:

It’s FAVORITE FONT FRIDAY and type artist Ahmet Altun has hit it home with the Festivo Font Family.
Festivo is a handmade, chunky and slightly condensed font that includes several textures, shadows and layers. Different font types can be created using the various combinations of these elements. All letters are hand-drawn and as a special bonus the font include many ornaments such as stars and hearts.
Festivo is a favorite in my font library because its various elements make it so versatile. Below are links to Festivo (uppercase & lowercase) and a few other gorgeous font options by the same type artist. The links provided are affiliate links and I may make a small commission, which will pay for a tall latte (not a grande!). My opinions and suggestions are all unbiased and ones that I believe will make this world, and your home, a more personal and well curated space.

Just returned from an oh-so-fabulous trip to Costa Rica. The lush landscapes, bountiful beaches and friendly locals make this country a true gem!
As the saying in Costa Rica goes, PURA VIDA or "pure life", symbolizes the idea of simply enjoying life, being happy and grateful. As I have fallen in love with the country, and this phrase, I decided to make some wall art to keep my spirits up all year long (read: It's snowing in Connecticut in April - ugh!).
Here's a rundown of how this was made, so you can also make your own personal wall art, with the wording that is meaningful to you:
Powered by Creative Market
- Download this fantastic script font, Just Lovely (by the talented Nikki Laatz). The font has so many alternates you can really customize the look. Here is a direct (affiliate) link to the font: https://crmrkt.com/D6gpQl?u=spinpin
- Set your text on the size sheet you want your final print to output. While Adobe Illustrator would give you most flexibility for typesetting, you may use MS Word and most other page layout programs.
- Save your page as high resolution PDF
- Send the PDF to your local print shop for a black & white print out.
- Pick up a nice modern frame at your local art shop, insert your print out, and hang!
Enjoy your beautiful new wall art and Pura Vida!
As I continue to master my Squarespace skills, the focus has been on learning more about all of the gorgeous templates offered, and the best way to go about choosing one. The Facebook Group Squarespace Community, has been a wealth of information, as well as the Squarespace Help Section. After reading and watching lots of demo videos, below are my main takeaways on how I should choose a template. As always, if you are a squarespace know-it-all, and have any advice on this, please share your tips below!
PURPOSE: What is the purpose of the website? To show an interior design portfolio? To sell delicious chocolate? To showcase a blog?
NAVIGATION BAR: Is the navigation fixed? Does the client want a more traditional Side Bar, the easy to read Top Bar, or perhaps the modern Hamburger Button (appear as three parallel horizontal lines)?
SCROLLING: Is Traditional Scrolling desired? Or perhaps the client preferred the more interactive Parralex Scrolling, where the background image content is moved at a different speed than the foreground content while scrolling.
BLOG: What type of Blog layout? A Grid layout with thumbnail images linking to a post? A Stacked and more classic layout which starts with the most recent blog post and simply reads down the page.
INDEX PAGE: Are Index Pages necessary? An Index Page collects images from different pages and shows them off in a grid, scrolling page, or slideshow.
Other questions to keep in mind are: How flexible is the template? Is there an eCommerce option and what do those templates look like? Are Cover Pages included in the template and which Cover Page design layouts are offered?
Over the next weeks, I’ll create a spreadsheet with the above categories, and fill in the template that matches each feature. I have seen a few of these spreadsheet online, but feel the need to create my own to become familiar with the templates.
Week 3 and still on a roll to mastering my squarespace skills. This week was all about getting my client organized by creating a first draft of their onboarding paperwork. I started working on a document in google docs and was almost done when I began to think about how to organize drag and drop folders for me to share files with my client, and for them to send me theirs. I could use google drive but as a designer, I am a true dropbox girl. Who’s with me on this? My google doc now had to become a word doc and to be honest, as a full-time adobe user, it is so hard for me to work in either of these programs. It always takes so much time to make things look right, as the way the actions are organized make absolutely no sense to me. For instance, if I want to indent text, it should be grouped with the text commands and not the layout commands. Right?
Moving on, it is so important that this on boarding paperwork is easy to read and follow as there are a lot of questions and instructions. Wording is simple and to the point. My client has this document now and we’ll see which parts she struggles with and may need to be revised.
Next weeks focus will be learning all about squarespace templates. Loooking in detail what each has to offer, and starting a spreadsheet to note the unique qualities of each. See you next week!
This weeks goal was all about finding a “client” to develop a squarespace website for. It’s important for me to go through the entire web development process from A-Z, to learn through hands on trial and error.
The first step was to decide who my ideal client is. After lots of distractions (code for: cute dog needed a snuggle + @shopbop sale) this is the initial working statement for my immediate business goals: To design and develop logo, branding and website design for women starting their own business, and to provide them with the knowledge and skills to confidently promote themselves online through various social media outlets.
With this statement in mind, I approached my boxing + bootcamp trainer, and an all-around gem of positivity, humor and mental strength. Because she fit in well with my initial business goal, I had my fingers triple-crossed for her agreement to work with me on this trial project and was thrilled when she agreed. We met yesterday to chat about her visions for her business and to discuss next steps.
This coming week will be about working on all on-boarding paperwork and sending that to my client to get started. We’ll see how the prepared document works for her and what needs to be revised. In the meantime, I’m heading over to the @squarespace website to sign up for a webinar on blogging. Stay tuned! #icandothis #goals #squarespace #webdesign #spinpincreative
Super serious and very excited about reaching my one-big-goal for this year: to master my squarespace skills and to be able to offer this expert service to clients as an extension of my logo & branding work.
As a print designer who grew up hand-assembling mechanicals (if you don’t know what those are, maybe google can help 🤣) website design and coding has been a big fear of mine but as I completed my own portfolio in squarespace, I came to realize that the process is not so daunting. While there is still tons to learn, this weeks focus was doing reasearch to figure out weekly goals, and to make lists for these next steps. I’ll briefly be keeping track of my journey here as a personal means to measure my progress, and most importantly, to hold myself accountable (did I just say that?)
If any designer friends want to master these skills together, reach out. To those of you who are experts, share tips below 🌈🌈🌈#icandothis #squarespace #goals #graphicdesign #spinpincreative
